The university engine
Hasanuddin University (Unhas) is the largest university in eastern Indonesia, with around 40,000 students. It graduated 11,311 people across its 2024 ceremonies, spanning bachelor's through professional and postgraduate degrees, in fields from economics and engineering to medicine and marine science. Universitas Negeri Makassar adds ceremonies of roughly 1,000 graduates almost monthly, many of them teacher-training and language graduates who make strong tutors, curriculum builders and structured administrators. UMI and the city's polytechnics add thousands more.
Local unemployment runs high: 9.71% in the city against 4.45% for the province. A large graduate supply and a thin local job market is exactly the condition that makes strong candidates answer international job posts.
